Your Security Adviser Talks NextGen Security With Ryan Loughin

I had the opportunity to meet with Ryan Loughin, President of NextGen Security, and his partner CEO Frank Brewer, in their new office in Exton, PA. Frank, Ryan and I have been colleagues since my days at Drexel University when Security Services and Technology (SST) was our security system integrator.

Over the years we have stayed in touch, and we recently ran into each other at ASIS International’s 2016 Annual Seminar and Exhibits and promised to catch up when we got back to Philadelphia.

After a few minutes of catching up regarding friends, family, and old acquaintances Ryan and I had time to take a tour of the new office space and talk about the state of security integration, and it’s future. By the way, NextGen did a fantastic job on designing an office space that encourages collaboration, provides a state-of-the-art demo and training area for clients, and an inviting work environment that includes a shuffleboard table.

 

YSA:     Thank for taking the time to meet with me. What can you tell me about NextGen Security?

Ryan:   To our clients, NextGen is a security integrator but more importantly a security innovator.  We specialize in having vertical market expertise to truly advise our clients that face real world challenges, regulatory and risk-based.  To our employees, NextGen is a great place to work and be a part of.  I believe our culture is second to none.

YSA:    What drove you to start NextGen Security?

Ryan:   What I call the market gap.  If you look at our industry it is, for the most part, made up of two different types of companies.  You’re either a very large public conglomerate that provides a multitude of different services like fire systems, HVAC, product manufacturing, security, etc. or you’re a small company servicing a very limited geography.

We see 90% of the integrator space being one of these two types of companies, and both have challenges servicing complex end users.  There are very few mid-sized, security focused and highly technical integrators in our market.  That’s the gap NextGen fills.

YSA:     You and I have been in the security business for a long time, given your experience and expertise what advice or recommendations would give young security professionals?

Ryan:  This a great industry to get involved in at a young age.  We need to see more of that across the board.  I don’t think the general public understands the stability of our market and it often gets overlooked when our younger generations are deciding on a long-term career path.  My advice is to get involved, network yourself and work smarter than your competition.  I’ve very rarely seen someone give this industry 100% and not get 100% back.

YSA:      What would you consider NextGen Security’s sweet spot?

Ryan:    Vertical expertise and our technical/operational capabilities.  We invested a lot of time and money in creating a best in class delivery system.  Our management team in these important areas is phenomenal and has a lot of experience in ensuring a quality product.

YSA:     Looking into your crystal ball, what challenges lie ahead for the security industry over the next 5-10 years?

Ryan:  There are several but one that sticks out the most is the “race to zero”.  What I mean by that is you see a lot of lower end manufacturers trying to flood the market with inferior products and solutions at a very low cost.  The video market is probably the most guilty.

That type of thing creates confusion for end users that need a quality solution and for the complex integrator it creates a major disturbance in the business model.  Being a great integrator with a highly talented staff isn’t cheap, the overhead costs don’t change.

YSA:     What does the future hold for NextGen?

Ryan:  We have grown at a tremendous rate quickly.  A lot of that has to do with the market gap I spoke to earlier.  That gap isn’t going away so we plan on continuing to fill it.  I would like NextGen to be known as the best multi-region security integrator in the business.  I feel we are in a great position to create a company that can do just that.

Ryan Loughin is President and co-founder of NextGen Security.  Ryan has enjoyed a career in the physical security industry for over 15 years and has been around security nearly his entire life.  Loughin grew up in a family of security professionals and knew it was a path he wanted to pursue at a relatively early age.

Ryan began his professional career at Security Services & Technologies (SST), a well-respected regional integrator at the time, and grew with the company through their transformation into a national provider of higher end security solutions.  During his 12 years with SST Ryan performed many different functions for the company but most notably was his founding of their Petrochemical & Energy Division.  Ryan developed this specialized department within SST and grew it into a major security provider to some of the world’s largest chemical, energy and oil & gas companies.

As President of NextGen, Ryan leads a company of hard-working professionals dedicated to creating an integration company that is best in class.  Ryan has responsibilities in all aspects of the company, oversees the daily operation, and looks to guide NextGen to continued growth and success.
